Selection Process
Stage 1 – Preliminary Examination (Objective Type): Two papers – General Studies (Paper I) and Aptitude Test (Paper II), each of 200 marks and 2 hours; both with multiple-choice questions and negative marking (1/3 of correct-answer marks for each wrong answer). Paper II (Aptitude) is qualifying; merit for Main Examination shortlisting is based on Paper I (General Studies) marks only; minimum qualifying marks: 33% for unreserved and 23% for reserved categories in each paper. Stage 2 – Main Examination (Conventional Type): Seven descriptive papers – Language, Essay, General Studies I to V – each of 200 marks and 3 hours; total 1400 marks. All shortlisted candidates must appear in all papers; absence in any paper leads to disqualification. Stage 3 – Interview/Personality Test: 100 marks; only candidates securing minimum marks in Main Examination as fixed by Commission are called, up to about three times the number of posts; final merit list is prepared based on aggregate of Main Examination (1400) and Interview (100) marks. Preliminary Examination is only a screening test; marks of Prelims are not counted in final selection. Separate unreserved and reserved lists are prepared as per reservation rules, and supplementary lists up to 25% of main list may also be prepared.
